Thanksgiving is approaching, and many things have changed on the farm!! Three hens have come to join us, their names are Chive, Fennel, and Pumpkin. They are not so smart, but that can be expected of chickens. (Although these hens may be a bit less smart than usual). Chive and Fennel are Australorps and are black with a green sheen to their feathers like beetles, and Pumpkin is a Rhode Island Red and is a dark reddish-orange. Pumpkin is the friendlier (and smarter) of the three. They have laid us three eggs in the past 2 weeks, (but they are also molting!), and are very cold and have not come out of their coup because of that. We are working on getting the light set up in the coup to increase egg production, and maybe a safe heat lamp in the goat barn as well, as the goats are still small, and the cold has been making them very, well, cold. We are looking at safe heat lamp models (so not to cause a barn fire) and making goat coats to keep them a bit warmer. Yes, winter has come!! Or at least the snow and freezing temperatures have. We have gotten about an inch and a half of snow all together this season so far, but right now we have about a half an inch. The lowest temperature there has been in a day is about 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The pond is working on freezing over and has a nice layer of ice over it now. We can't wait for skating! The goats have gotten bigger, yet again, and are continuing to get friendlier each time we give them alfalfa grain, which they love. Here are some pictures of the animals and the wintry weather.
